Old Skool Animations! Floatyness! Pop'n n Lock'n!

I find it funny how much I have learned by looking back at my old animations. Most of them where done 2006-2007 while studying computer animation at school.

This was my very first animation done with sound where I had to animate a character acting and talking.



My second try animating a lipsync. A little better than my first but still having problems with floatyness, swimming facial expression, moving holds, and weak poses.



Third try. Getting a little better with moving holds and poses. Snappier movement and not as floaty. But this time I had too many ideas being animated and trying fit together in a short amount of time. Both of the characters were moving way too much at the same time which leaves the viewer confused not knowing who to look at and too much camera movement. A lot of the follow through and settle in was overboard and silhouettes are not clear.



Another old animation lipsync this time I got a lot of help from some really kool animators at the 11 Second Club. Its a lot better than my past works and has better moving holds, silhouette, and poses. This time the characters where not competing with each other for viewing time as much as the last one. Though there are still a lot needed to be learned. I had to start really thinking inside the characters for better acting choices, plan out the arcs and have better ease ins and outs, spacing and start polishing on a higher level. I find myself thinking more creatively with every new shot I work on and not having to worry about the technical or fundamental principles as much. I'm thinking more about how is the best way to tell the story and acting thats in the animation.

1st Rough Draft Animatic for Short Film



Here is a rough animatic to help visualize the story better without the sound yet. I will be drawing the panels over again with better clearer drawings and camera angles, composition, adding more shots needed, and adding more movement to help visualize camera movements and ideas for the way the short will be animated.

Short Film Summary


Its a sunny day in a little town just outside the city. Kids playing and people working. Suddenly a storm comes in and its starts pouring rain. A window in one of the apartments starts to flash. Inside the apartment lives a happy little family. Mom is out shopping for groceries and left her son of 7 years and daughter of 3 at home. The big brother is frustrated that its raining and he cant go out to play. His little sister is watching her favorite show but it annoys his brother so he changes the channel to watch a monster movie. The brother gets so excited from the monster in the movie he wants to be just like the monster destroying buildings so he start to act like a monster. The brother takes his sisters favorite baby doll and rips it peaces and his sister cries out in terror. The brother realizes what he has done and gets a flash back remembering one time he broke his sister barbie doll. His sister just had to scream out the magic words and he would get a mean spanking from their mom. So she screams "MOMMMYYYY!!!!!!" and the mom spanks the brother. The boy is snapped back to reality and the TV catches his attention again. It shows a super hero defeating the monster and saving the day. So the boy grabs a cape and plays hero. He fixes the baby and puts it back together again and hands it to his little sister. Everything seems like a happy ending until Mom is returns home. The boy begs his sister not to tell on him. The sister reassures him and give him a thumbs up letting him know she wont tell. But she then she turns her thumb upside down and gets ready to scream. The boy turns pale white in fear as his sister turns red with anger. She takes a deep breath and screams. "MOMMMYYYY!!!!!!" Then it cuts to the credits where you hear the brother being spanked.

Real2Reels Commercial 2007




Here is a short animation I created way back in early 2007 for a website. This was my first freelance job where I was asked to create a short commercial which took two months for me to finish.
The original characters designs were made by Animator Kiel Figgins.
